HGSGA Update - July 3, 2025
Individual Stableford
A perfect weather day at HG today for our Stableford. Also special as it is my wife’s birthday (yes, she said it was okay for me to be on the links- probably a birthday present to her). The course showed that it absorbed the recent rains well, though the greens seemed a bit slow. But we had some fine points scores led by Charlie Overly (a winner last week as well) with 44 points. F.T. Case followed closely behind with 41 points and Tony Kausal rounded out the top 3 with 40 points.
The rounds seemed to go smoothly from a time perspective as I was able to leave HG with all cards in by 1:20. Thanks for that! I think it is more enjoyable for all when the rounds are at or near the standard 4 hour pace of play.
A couple reminders. We need to make sure that someone in each group has the Golf Genius scoring responsibility. GG is not difficult to use or load onto your phone. This avoids our having to enter the scores after play, and it means the leaderboard is not up to date when entries are delayed. The second note is that unless announced otherwise, we putt them all in. NO in-the-leather gimmies.
As always, thanks to all members who played today for making things go smoothly. And it allowed me to get out and go pick up a birthday cake!
Next week is a home MISGA. Mike Caporaletti and his team of HGSGA volunteers do a great job with this, and the Turn House lunch is a nice plus. Hope to see you there.
Happy Independence Day USA, and I hope all enjoy a fun and safe holiday weekend.
Cheers!

HGSGA Update - June 26, 2025
Championship Series #3
It was an almost perfect day for our CS3. Perhaps a “little” warm for some, but not quite as bad as the 2 prior days. The course, minus #10, also seems to be holding up. Let’s hope we get back on #10 soon.
There was also some hot golf played, with Brooke Greer leading the way at 1 under 71. Following close behind on the Gross side of things were Kwangsoo Han and Ed Cava at 73. These names all sound very familiar. Leading the way on the Net side was Charlie Overly at 7 under, 65, followed by Mac Ramsey at -4, 68, and Steve Poulos at -2, 70. Gift Card results are shown below.
After the first 3 rounds of the Championship Series, and looking at those who have posted 3 rounds: Brooke Greer leads in Gross at 218, followed by Doug Wilson at 224, Ed Cava at 226, and Kwangsoo Han at 232; on the Net side, F.T.Case, Ed Cava and Rick Bergin are tied at 215. Still a long way to go with 3 more rounds to play.
Next week is our Individual Stableford. Below we have reports on the Match Play Championship and the MISGA Past Presidents Tournament.
Cheers!

HGSGA Update - June 19, 2025
2-Man Scramble
Today was our 2-man scramble and also the qualifier for the MISGA 2-Man. We finally seem to be getting our hot weather started, which added to the “fun” of a long course from recent rains. But somehow our group had many who shined through the conditions to record impressive scores.
Coming in 1st this week was the team of Kwangsoo Han and Bruce Winstead with an 8 under 64, including an eagle by Bruce on Hole #15. Also at 64 and in 2nd by virtue of the tiebreaker was the team of Ed Cava and Stuart Resnick. Rounding out the top 3 was the tag team of Andy Finkel and Bill Stetka at 6 under, 66.
For the MIGA State Qualifier (determined by those who said “Yes”), our Low Gross team will be Ed Cava/Stuart Resnick(70), and the Low Net teams are Andy Finkel/Bill Stetka(66) and Dave Hohman/Jeff Neale (67). Alternates will be contacted if one of the qualifying groups decides not to go forward.
Next week is Championship Series#3. Early forecast is for some hot temps. Hopefully things will be dried out and greens cut.
Cheers!

HGSGA Update - June 19, 2025
HGSGA Update - May 29, 2025
Championship Series #2- May 29, 2025-Special Note on June Play
CS#2 was a longish course and a very long day for many. Five (5) hours seems too long, even with cart path only. Let’s find ways to speed things up (see some suggestions below).
For CS#2 it was Tim Seelaus scoring a winning 2 under 70 for 1st gross, with Brooke Greer in 2nd (via tiebreaker) and Doug Wilson 3rd with 74s. On the net side it was Dan Guy with a sizzling -9 (gross 78) followed by F.T. Case at net-3, and Rick Bergin in 3rd with net-2 (via tiebreaker). It’s a bit early to show totals too date. As always, players are only eligible to win in one of the categories. Players who placed in both categories were put in where they received the greater prize.
All scores were posted in GHIN. As this was a true championship round it is noted as a Competition score.
Beginning on or about June 9, hole #10 will be closed for irrigation work. This is anticipated to take 3-4 weeks. During this period we will skip from #9 to #11. For hole #10, a net par will be recorded. That means to if you do not get a stroke, you score a 4, with 1 stroke in handicap a 5 and if 2 strokes in handicap, a 6.
Finally, please remember that if you have signed up to play on June 5, we will be using tee times instead of a shot gun. You may play any game you choose within your group on that date (or none if that is the decision). Look for the tee sheet to be sent out for this. We need to play in this manner because the Member–Guest will be starting later in the day.
Once again, think how we can speed up play. Line up putts ahead of time so ready to go when it is your turn; maximum 1 practice swing; have the club you want to use for your shot in hand and be ready to go when it is your turn; record scores while others are hitting. I am sure there are other ways we can quicken the pace, and make things more enjoyable for all.
Cheers!

HGSGA Update - May 8th, 2025
We had a beautiful day for the first round of the HGSGA 2025 Match Play Tournament. With the course rounding into shape, and preferred lies everywhere, we had some really good scores and a lot of close matches, as well as an Eagle by Mike Doyle on hole #13!! Many matches went to the last hole, and it took Keith Thompson 20 holes before he could get past Bill Duncan in the match of the day. Congratulations to all of today's winners and good luck as you work your way to the bracket finals, and then the playoffs which will begin in September. From this point on, it will be up to you to schedule your next match.
You are welcome to play on Thursday's as long as it is not a MISGA event. Next week, May 15th, is our first home MISGA, so no matches next week.
Check the button above to see the updated brackets. To all of today's winners, please confirm that you are correctly posted to the next round and look to see who your next opponent is. Feel free to email, me - Mark Cardwell with any questions. [email protected] The deadline to play your next Match is June 29th, but please don't wait, as rainouts are always a possibility and life happens. Try and get your next match in by mid-June if possible. We still have a few first round matches to get done, so a few of you will have to wait to see who your next opponent is. Once again Congratulations to everyone on a great day yesterday and to many more good matches in 2025!
All the best, Mark
HGSGA Update - May 1, 2025
Championship Series #1
May 1 turned out to be terrific weather for the start of our Championship Series. No excuses there, and with “movability everywhere, no excuses there either. 72 members took to the battlefield and there was some hot scoring. On the gross side, Brooke Greer lead the way with a 73, closely followed by Mike Doyle, Doug Wilson and Ed Cava at +3, 75. On the net side, Randy Maddox sizzled with a net 65, followed by Steve Poulos at 67 and Steve Gaudio at 68.
Please note that as always, players are only eligible to win in one of the categories. Players who placed in both categories were put in where they received the greater prize.
All scores were posted in GHIN. As this was a true championship round it is noted as a Competition score.
Next week is the opening day of our Match Play, another exciting season-long event. Hopefully the weather will cooperate again.
Cheers!

HGSGA Update - April 24, 2025
What a perfect day for the Hobbits Glen Senior Golfers to get out and play. No frost delay and perfect weather led to some high scoring in today's 4-man Shamble. A big thank you to David Hohman for managing Golf Genius and to every team for doing a great job of putting your scores into golf genius.
Congratulations to the three teams that tied for first place. Each player on those teams will receive a $15 gift card. The team led by Andy Finkel finished 4th and the Steve Poulos team finished 5th. Each player on those teams will receive $10 gift cards.
Just a reminder that next week will be the first round of this year's Championship Series. We will ask that you keep your scores on both your score cards and input your scores into Golf Genuis and do the same the following week which is the first round of the 2025 Match Play Championships. There is still room on SignUpGenius for both events.
Once again congratulations to today's winners and thank to everyone for helping make today so much fun.

HGSGA Update - April 17, 2025
Individual Stableford
Although we were off to a frosty start this morning, things certainly heated up on the course for our Individual Stableford. After all the points were calculated (and recalculated due to a computer scoring error noted below), our Entertainer Extraordinaire, Mason Sebastian, ruled the day with 47 points. Tied at 2nd just 1 point behind were Dan Guy and Danny Callaghan. We paid 17 places out of the 59 entrants, using a tiebreaker for those at 36 points.
The leaderboard originally showed Rob Gettier and Andy Finkel as leading the pack. They were late entries, and when inputted into the system, the computer set them up with handicaps as if they were playing the Black Tees. This necessitated revising the leaderboard.
Our next scheduled event is a 4 person Shamble on 4/17. Our Championship series begins on 5/1.
Hit em long and straight!

HGSGA Update - April 10, 2025
This was our first rain format event. Hopefully there will not be many more during the season, although rain this time of year is a good thing. While not the best weather, those that stayed were able to complete the round. Please make sure to record your scores on GHIN.
For those who were awarded gift cards for our 3/27 and 4/3 events, there was a bit of delay in preparing these. I am following up on this, and hopefully they will be done by the end of next week.
Our next scheduled event is an Individual Stableford on 4/17. I hope you have signed up. The current forecast (always subject to changeJ) looks reasonable.
See you next week!

HGSGA Update - April 3, 2025
What started out under overhead skies turned into a pretty nice day for April as we had 64 players for our ABCD. I was sad that I could not join in for today, but my thoughts were surely on the links. Leading the way this week was the team of Tim Harwood, Dan Guy and Nick Girardi (assisted with a blind) for a score of 11 under 133. Three teams tied at -10, with the grouping of Mike Caporaletti, Mark Cardwell, Bruce Johnson and Bill Duster taking 2nd in a tie-breaker. We will post the individual scores to GHIN.
Next week is a 4-person Nassau. This is played within the group. The goal is to have all within the group with similar handicaps. Full handicap applies. For a foursome, low net on each side wins $5 and low net total $10. Ties split. Note that start time will be at 8:30 am.
We paid 5 places with HG gift card amounts as noted below. As always, the gift cards will be prepared by the pro shop and available there. It usually takes about a week for this.
Tim Harwood, Dan Guy, Nick Girardi- $25 each
Mike Caporaletti, Mark Cardwell, Bruce Johnson, Bill Duster- $20 each
Greg Fasick, Dave Derheim, Marty Moran, Matt Hauser- $16 each
Ed Cava, Chris Chaplain, Mark Shevland- $16 each
Bob Egge, Jim Bona, Ralph Johns, Steven Hutcheson- $13 each
Congrats to all!!
See you next time.

HGSGA Update - March 27, 2025
Texas Scramble
Welcome to our 2025 Season! After a moderate frost delay, our 14 groups smacked their way around the newly created White/Gold hybrid course (designed by Mike Caporaletti and others) in a Texas Scramble format. The weather had a bit of a chill, aided by a cool wind, but that did not stop some hot scoring. In the end it was the team of Brooke Greer, Joe Duklewski, Frank Ryan and Steven Hutcheson posting 9 under 63, clearing the field by 3. The grouping of Bob Egge, Dave Derheim, Ray Akerson and Henry Leland came in 2nd at -6, with 3 groups tied at -5. A terrific way to start things off. While the Gold tee course will continue to be our main mode for events, the new White/Gold hybrid version may sneak its way in from time to time.
Next week is a 4-person ABCD. Note that start time will still be at 9 am. (we are scheduled to change to 8:30 beginning on 4/10).
We paid 5 places with HG gift card amounts as noted below. As always, the gift cards will be prepared by the pro shop and available there. It usually takes about a week for this.

HGSGA Update - October 31, 2024
We had a perfect Halloween start this morning with a mist over the course at the start. It lifted quickly and turned into a fabulous weather day, especially for 10/31. Forty-three members selected their best 4 clubs and took on Hobbit’s. In the end it was Patrick Orwig leading our Stableford with 42 points, with Don Van Deusen close behind with 40 points. We paid off down to 34 points as shown below.
This was our last official event of the year. I want to thank all of you for making this a terrific season. I had a great time finishing my first season as your President. My special thanks to a great volunteer leadership group, without whom we would not have our HGSGA. They include Ian Sumner-Immediate Past President, Mark Cardwell-Vice President, Rich Rocca-Treasurer, Neil Bucklew- Associate Treasurer Denny Walsh-Secretary, Lew Shipp-Golf Genius Administrator Extraordinaire, Mike Caporaletti-MISGA Representative, Calendar Coordinator, and Home MISGA Leader, Mac Ramsey-Webmaster, and Reg Hahne and Dave Hohman-Columbia Cup Leaders. I apologize if I unintentionally left anyone off my listing. Send me a note so I may make amends. As you can see it truly takes a village.
Mike Caporaletti has graciously put together a HGSGA sign up (12 spots) for the offseason, as Hobbit’s changes to a shotgun. An email notification has been sent out for November with a link to SignUpGenius. Check your email or the site if you are interested.
Stay tuned as we will send out information on signup for HGSGA 2025 season later in the year.

HGSGA Update - October 24, 2024
A fun day with our 4-Man ABCD and annual banquet. We avoided a frost delay though many of us could not avoid a 3-putt here and there on the fast, but very nice, greens. The group of Don Van Deusen, Jim Bona, Mac Ramsey and F.T. Case headed the leaderboard at -12, with the 4-some of Gerry Logue, Ian Sumner, Mark Shevland and Charles Fitzhugh in second at -10.
We were all winners after the round with our annual banquet at the Turn House. A great way to celebrate our season and our seasonal winners in the Match Play and the Championship Series. To recap, in match play, Kwangsoo Han took the title in a finals match versus Wayne Moore, with Andy Finkel over Ian Sumner in a match of our other bracket winners. In the Championship Series, it was Doug Wilson taking the Gross title, with Brooke Greer in 2nd and Bruce Winstead in 3rd. On the Net side it was Randy Maddox in 1st followed by Ed Cava in 2nd and Bill Stetka in 3rd.
Of course, a highlight of the banquet was our very own, very talented, Mason Sebastian, who generously provided wonderful songs and repartee. If you stuck around toward the end you witnessed a number of our crew holding phones high, lights on, in a wave of appreciation. Really terrific!!
October 31 is our final event of the season, our famous/infamous 4-club. Yes, the 4 club DOES include a putter if you choose it. Always fun if not a bit frustrating. We may even have some Halloween treats available.
Now for the gift card awards from the ABCD, listed below:

HGSGA Update - October 17, 2024
Two-Person Team Stableford with Guest Option
Although it was a frosty start and the winds were present throughout, the sun did warm things up a bit during the round as we had our rescheduled Guest Day as part of our Team Stableford. The duo of Alex Pagnotta and Don VanDeusen topped the leaderboard with 80 points, followed by the team of Brooke Greer and Jeff Neale with 77 points. Mark Cardwell captured the closest to the pin competition on #5 at 3 feet and change, and Brooke Greer took closest on #11 at about 1’6” if I recall correctly (I did not remember to note the exact distances so my bad). Gift card awards were handed out at the fire pit for those that stayed around. For those that did not, I will have them for you on the 24th.
Speaking of October 24th, we have our 4 person ABCD on that date, so hit the signup genius if you have not already done so. And Halloween brings our season to a close with the challenging 4-club tourney.
Finally, please remember our seasonal banquet, scheduled for October 24 at the Turn House, following our round that day. This is a separate signup on signup genius. It will be the usual great way to celebrate our golf season (although we have another event scheduled for October 31). Trophies and season-long event awards will be handed out at that time. Signup for the banquet will close out at noon on Sunday, 10/20, as we need to provide a firm head count to the Turn House.

HGSGA Update - October 10, 2024
Championship Series #6
Today was the final round in our Championship Series. With the wind blowing, fast greens and some tough rough areas, it made for a good setting for our final test in the Series. Doug Wilson won the Low Gross with a total score of +3, 291, with Brooke Greer 2 behind at +5, 203, and Bruce Winstead taking 3rd at +18, 306. On the Net side, Randy Maddox was 1st at +1, 289 followed by Ed Cava at +4, 292, and Bill Stetka taking 3rd in a tie breaker at +8, 296. Congratulations to all!!
Today was also a gross and net event. The course proved a worthy opponent as Brooke Greer took Low Gross at 79 in a tie-breaker with Tim Seelaus, who placed 2nd. On the Net side it was Curt Island with a +1, 73, followed by Carl Wikse in 2nd at +2, 74.
Next week (October 17) is a 2-person team Stableford with Guest Day Option. This event will be a $10 entry fee per person, covering range balls, donuts and juice, 2 closest to the pin prizes (#s 5 and 11) and team awards. If you are bringing a guest, please note the guest name and playing index/handicap from our gold tees in your signup. If you do not have a guest, make your own pairing or we will make one when the tee sheet is done. Also, if you bring a guest, both the member and guest must ride (ace card rate is allowed for the member). Cart or other fees to the course are payable inside. We will collect the $10 outside as we usually do.
Finally, please remember to sign up for our seasonal banquet, scheduled for October 24, at the Turn House, following our round that day. It will be the usual great way to celebrate our golf season (although we have another event scheduled for October 31). Trophies and season-long event awards will be handed out at that time.

Match Play Finals
Congratulations to Kwangsoo Han. He is the winner of the 2024 HGSGA Match Play Championship.
Kwangsoo won 1Up as he held off Wayne Moore in today's championship match.
Wayne jumped off to an early 3-hole lead as he won each of the first three holes. Kwangsoo began chipping away at Wayne's lead and took a commanding 2-hole lead with only two holes to go. Wayne then won the 17th hole to force it the 18hole where they tied and Kwangsoo finished as the 1Up winner.
In the 3rd place playoff match Andy Finkel outlasted Ian Sumner to win 3&2.
The final standing for this year's Match Play Championships was:
First Place - Kwangsoo Han
Second Place - Wayner Moore
Third Place - Andy Finkel
Fourth Place - Ian Sumner
Congratulations to all four players on winning their brackets and making it to the playoffs.
HGSGA Update - October 3, 2024
2-Man Scramble - Finally a day without rain, and even some sun for our 2-man scramble. The team of F. T. Case and Ric Vranek led the way at -7, 65. One stroke behind was the duo of Mike Caporaletti and Brooke Greer at -6, 66. A total of 6 teams broke par. Great scores on a day where the course was playing long and remained cart path only.
Next week (10/10) is our Championship Series round (#6). Remember that even if you may not be in the running, we still have our usual one-day event for that round.
Also, we are heading toward our season-end banquet on October 24. It will be held at the Turn House and follow our scheduled 4man ABCD. Please make sure to sign up.
Our final scheduled event is a Halloween 4-club on the 31st. Always fun to see the strategies used in this one.

HGSGA Update - September 12, 2024
Florida Scramble-Calling our event today a scramble was right on the mark as we had several last minute changes and confusion. I added to it as I differentiated on the # of required drives between a 4-some and a 3-some, but not on the need for a rotation through the hole of a 4th hitter for the 3-somes. I apologize for that as some groups knew this to be the case and others did not. Having said that we had one (1) 4-some finishing at -16, and one (1) 3-some at that same score. We also had a 3-some that did not use a rotation, so they were only hitting 3 shots each time, but still finished at -15. I made a Presidential decision to move them up to -16, creating a 3-way tie for first. I hope you will agree that this is a fair outcome. We also paid a 4th place to one of the remaining groups at -15, determined by the Golf Genius tiebreaker.

2-Person Chapman
With a few rumbles of thunder in the distance, but no rain other than a couple wayward drops, we held our 2-person Chapman event today. We were fortunate as I understand there was a big rain event just west of us toward Mt. Airy. On the course Dennis Hayes and Ric Vranek created their own storm leading the pack with at 8 under 64. Coming in second using our tiebreaker was the team of Brooke Greer and Tom Romeo at -7/65. Also at that score and taking 3rd was the team of Don Bryan and Jeff Neale. We paid 8 places.
Next week is Championship Series #5, so practice up as we close in on the final 2 rounds. Remember, even if you don’t think you are in it for the entire series, we still play each round as a separate event.
The Gift Card awards for this week are as follows:

Match Play Report
The 2024 Match Play Tournament Playoffs are now set. Ian Sumner defeated Dwight Johnson 3 & 2 to win the C bracket.
Ian will play Wayne Moore who is the winner of the D bracket in the first round of the playoffs.
The other semi-final match is between the A & B winners - Kwangsoo Han will play Andy Finkel
The semi-final matches need to be played by September 12th, with the finals match being done by October 4th.
Congratulations to our bracket winners, and good luck in the playoffs.

Brooke Greer, Joe Duklewski, Frank Ryan, Steven Hutcheson- $20 each

Dennis Hayes and Ric Vranek-$25 each
Brooke Greer and Tom Romeo-$22 each
Don Bryan and Jeff Neale-$20 each
Tony Kausal and Steve Roderick-$17 each
