Slow play is not acceptable – we have committed to completing our rounds in 4hrs15mins. Failure to do this could jeopardize our ability to maintain Shotgun Starts.
  • Play ready golf – don’t wait!
  • If riding in a cart – drop you partner near his ball and go to yours.
  • Look for lost ball no more than 3 min
  • Limit Practice swings
  • Be ready to putt when it is your turn – putt out whenever you can.
  • Pick up if you are out of the hole, whenever appropriate. Remember, you can’t post more than a net double bogey (CS is an exception we need all strokes).
  • Keep your 4some moving – if you have a slower player in group, nudge him to keep moving.
  • Walkers – grab a ride between holes if available.
Sign up Genius will close on Sundays for our home events in order to give a headcount to the Pro Shop.If you are not able to play after signing up, we need you to alert us as far in advance as possible so that we can make any adjustments.

I can’t stress how important it is that we maintain pace of play. If we are unable to do so, we might wind up adjusting some of our rounds to Tee Times, which I do not think is in the best interest of our group. So, each of us needs to be alert to slow play and keep our foursomes moving. If you see you are more than a ½ hole behind, then you need to speed things up.

Countdown to opening Day!
While it’s still too cold for many of us, we only have about 4 weeks until our first HGSGA event, opening day March 31st.
Your executive committee hasn’t just been sitting in their recliners watching Netflix, but have worked to put together a rather robust calendar for 2022. You should take time to visit Sign Up Genius and look at all the important dates so that you can plan your schedules accordingly.
We will have the regular seasonal events: 6 Championship Series (CS), Match Play event, Guest day and based on the survey results, we plan to have a series of Scrambles, 2Man and 4Man events. We are planning to return to Closest to the Pin when appropriate.
We will continue the Columbia Cup series, Reg Hahne and David Hohman will be the captains.

For State events: Listed On Sign Up Genius, also information on www.Misga.org

  • ABCD  - We will use the Championship Series (CS), your lowest round of the first 2 CS as the qualifier.
  • 2Man - Start canvasing for your partner, our qualifier is on Jul 7th.

MISGA Events:
Mike Caporaletti, our MISGA rep, has locked down 31 away events.

  • A change to this season will be that we will not use a lottery system for those clubs who limit us, but rather will announce the opening of the sign up to all and then it will be based on the order of sign up. Everyone will know in advance of the time and date of the opening for signing up.
  • There are 5 home MISGA’s scheduled and we’re working with the Turn House to solidify lunch arrangements. Our 1st Home MISGA event is on May 26th. Again, I am asking that you strongly consider supporting these events.

2021 Season Wrap-Up

All in all a successful season, considering what we went through with the COVID restricted year before. We started the season with a questionnaire asking about the group’s preference for the types of games they preferred, surprisingly it was more of the “mixer” and scramble types. So we took a varied approach to the planning and it seems it was favorably received. I even threw in a few new games, seems they were favorably received.

The MISGA portion of the year continued to be a challenge for away events, with some cancellations due to clubs dropping out of MISGA as well as limitations to the number of players we could send. We got around the player limitations by instituting a lottery system, some liked it some did not. Oh well, I’ve learned not everyone is pleased with what we do.
We had a good representation in the State ABCD and 2Man Tournaments this year.
  • Bob Egge won the State ABCD  Gross Championship (repeated his 2019 winning)
  • Craig Ostrom & Doug Wilson won the 2Man Gross Grand Championship

We ran two HGSGA championship events again this year:
Match Play produced the following
  • Reg Hahne captured the overall Match Play championship
  • Gerry Logue 2nd place
  • Jim Bona 3rd place
  • Tim Seelaus 4th place

Championship Series:
  • Bob Egge won the Gross Championship
  • Mark Cardwell won the Net Championship

A lot of effort was done by our officers and volunteers for the season. Without their skills, the success of our season would not have occurred.
  • President – Ian Sumner
  • Vice President – Mark Cardwell
  • Treasurer – Randy Maddox
  • Secretary/Treasurer – Rich Roca
  • MISGA Rep – Bill Duncan
  • Golf Genius Manager – Lew Shipp
  • Columbia Cup – Dwight Johnson & Reg Hahne
  • Year End BBQ – Rich Roca & Neil Bucklew
  • Volunteers for various activities
    • Felton Satterfield
    • Rick Bergin
    • Fred Chiccone

And a thanks to the Hobbits staff who worked hard to make sure we were able to get out on time, both for our weekly and MISGA events.

There seems to be an ongoing hunger to get out and play golf. So we have extended our season through November – allowing for shotgun starts in the early weeks and transitioning to tee times thereafter as long as weather permits.

Finally, thanks to everyone who attended our year end BBQ. We were serenaded by Bob Smith who surprised us all.

For next year we plan to continue to offer a variety of games, looking to add some new events. We will also seek additional volunteers to assist in different areas of the program.
Stay safe over the winter months, get out of your recliners and stretch now and then. We need all of you back next year ready to go on day one!

Ian Sumner

HGSGA Update - October 21, 2021

I heard from some guys after the round today, they felt like this was the Squid Games rather than the Skins Games, wading through the freshly laid manure. Obviously I liked the skins format today. It was a rare occurrence that my partner, Bob Smith, and I were able to make a pair of back to back birdies on holes 7 & 8. Just goes to prove that old adage,  Even a Blind Squirrel can make a putt  - or something like that....

Winners split the pot of $256

Bob Smith & Ian Sumner - 2 skins - Net 8 on hole 7, Net 4 on hole 8: $64 each
Ralph Bowe & Tony Kausal - 1 skin - Net 7 on hole 6: $32 each
Craig Ostrom & Tim Seelaus - 1 skin - Net 8 on hole 15: $32 each

Medal Play - Net Final

Another match was decided today, Mark Cardwell and Curt Island completed the playoff for 1st and 2nd place in out Championship Series. Their match came down the 18th hole and resulted in a tie, so they went to sudden death.

Results – Mark Cardwell is the 2021 Championship Winner. Congratulations to both players.

Next week, 10/28,  we will have another 2 Man event, this time a scramble. You can pick a partner if you have not already done so, just indicate it on Sign Up Genius. And, if you haven’t signed up do so now, after Sunday the sign up will close and we will wait list individuals.

Reminder: After the round this coming Thursday, 10/28, we will meet upstairs in the Umbrella area of the Turn House to have a BBQ and give out awards to our Season winners. Make sure you have signed up on Sign Up Genius so that we have an accurate head count to give to the restaurant.

Finally, as we end our “normal season” and enter into the extended season in November Tee times begin at 9:30 in November We will use a shotgun start the weeks of 11/4, 11/11 and 11/18. However, if we have 20 or fewer players signed up, we will instead use individual tee times starting at 9:30 and send 4somes off #1 in 10 minute intervals After Thanksgiving, we will continue with reserving tee times for our group on Thursdays as long as we have enough players willing to play.

Finally,  Mike Caporaletti sent in the following report after playing this  week's MISGA at Navy. Keep it in mind for next year. Course redesign is fabulous. Greens a bit slow and bumpy. Should be great next year. Here are the results

A Flight
1st - Kevin Kokes
2nd - Mike Caporaletti

B Flight
1st - Richard Violette
3rd - Matt Hauser

See you next week.

Ian

HGSGA Update - October 14, 2021

Let’s hope for more days like today. Good weather, good companions, somewhat good golf.

Listed below are the final standings and money winners from today.

Next week you have a chance at big money! Our first skins event – it could result in a larger than normal payout for a few winners. Remember, this is a 2man team event, both balls count - net for each hole. 95% handicap, however, no strokes will be given on the Par 3’s.

If you have not picked your partner by this Sunday, then we will pair you up. No changes after that.

If we have no skins winners, then we will pay the top 2 Net and top 2 Gross teams (and ties). And NO, you can’t win both categories.

Also, we had several winners from the Hampshire Greens MISGA:

Tim Seelaus – 1st Place & 2 winning 50/50 ticket
Ralph Bowe – 2nd Place
Richard Violette – 3rd Place

HGSGA Update - October 7, 2021

Lots going on today, Championship series 6, match play finals and just plain old fun golf (for most of us).

Championship Series Update

Gross Division now has a winner:

HGSGA Update - September 30, 2021

Looks as if most of us had a good time today. Things went off smoothly despite having the
largest field to date 82 players.Listed below are our money winners - however we are missing the information from Hole #8 closest to the pin. If anyone has it, let me know and we will pay out to that individual.

For the team scores we broke ties by using the hardest hole method. We paid out to the top 10 teams. We will have gift cards done soon, if you brought a guest and they were winners, you need to pick up the card for them and give it to them.

Today's Money Winners - Name, Prize, and Net Score

Caporaletti, Mike + Tuck, Mike $20 60
Fields, Richard + Knott, Bill $18 61
Feldstein, Steve + Norton, Bill $17 64
Shipp, Lew + Shipp, Susan $16 64
Finkel, Andy + Littman, Paul $15 65

Art Crisafulli (Closest to Pin 11) $15 27inches
Bruce Johnson (Closet to Pin 16) $15 7'0"

Unfortunately my team came in Dead Last at #40. But, I was rewarded with a couple of “shots”for my two birdies – something the ladies have made a practice of doing. Made the day better!

Next week is the final Championship Series. Also scheduled is an away MISGA on the same day, so if you are in the hunt for the Championship Series – choose wisely.

We also have the final four settled for the Match Play series. Reg Hahne will play Gerry Logue for 1st & 2nd places Tim Seelaus will play Jim Bona for 3rd & 4th places.

See you on October 7!

HGSGA Update - September 16, 2021

Good field today with nice weather and enjoyable foursome. Click here for today's results

Learned something on the practice green this morning, actually reinforced something most of us are probably familiar with doing. Bruce Winstead told me, when the greens are aerated and full of sand – just Whack It. I found that advice to be so good, I will continue to Whack It.

Also, learned a new Mantra – Steve Sutton commented constantly on the round  "It’s gonna be Okay, It’s gonna be Alright!”

So from now on, when I screw up a shot, no more muttering  #*@!. Instead - “It’s gonna be Okay, It’s gonna be Alright!”

We had a nice turnout for the MISGA at Woodmore. Click here for the results.

Next week is CS6, bring your best game. 10 players are within 7 strokes of the net leaders. Harder to catch the Gross leader, he has a 14 stroke lead over his closest competitor.

Finally, questions are still coming up about the Member Guest Day on 9/30/21.

·      You may bring one guest
·      They pay what you pay based on your membership, including Ace Card rate
·      $5 Prize Money per Person
·      We will play one flight, best 2 of 4 net.
·      If your guest has a Handicap or Index, please post it on Sign up Genius.
·      If you guest does not have and established Handicap, give us an Estimate
·      Plan on Closest to the Pin contest on Par 3’s
·      Longest Drive (most likely on Hole 1)
·      50/50 drawing
·      Coffee and Doughnuts.

HGSGA Update - September 9, 2021

Gloomy weather didn’t deter…

What appeared to be a less than desirable day turned out to be very comfortable. We had a good turnout, 55 in total and from the feedback I received, the guests seemed to enjoy themselves.

Click for today's results.. Click for  a hole by hole report so that everyone can see exactly what happened to them once the blind draws were added. In addition some of the online scoring had to be corrected so the leaderboard was misleading at times.

A couple of points;

·      The printed scorecard did not reflect the adjusted handicap as many of you pointed out. We played with 85%, the Golf Genius phone app did reflect this on a hole by hole basis. We’ll be sure to make the adjustment next time so that you see the adjusted handicaps.

·      It was suggested that we choose the blind draws prior to teeing off. Good point, we’ll attempt to do this in the future, however, no promises if we find ourselves in a rush or shorthanded or trying to deal with multiple no shows.

Next week we have the 4Man Stableford, make sure to sign up before Sunday evening. We don’t need to keep juggling the 4somes.

Finally, I received confirmation from Rodney that we can continue our HGSGA weekly events through Nov into early December. We will plan to maintain Sign up Genius for Shotgun starts for the first 3 Thursdays in November with regular games. Then after that, we will look at securing a block of tee times into December as long as enough guys sign up and want to play. We did this last winter and it seemed to work out. I plan to end it for the months of January and February, picking up again in March (weather permitting).

HGSGA Update - September 2, 2021

Glad we were able to get the game in today. As was pointed out to me, next time we have a heavy rain, we will try to get an evaluation of the bunkers and possibly declare them unplayable.

Only one more chance to improve your standings for the Championship Series. There are 10 of you within striking distance of the Net leaders – between 2-7 strokes off. The Gross Leader is ahead by 14 strokes, a lot of ground to make up with only one round left.

Click the this link for the List of Money winners from today.

Next week is out last Home MISGA, I hope to see more of you turning out. As of today, only 14 members have signed up, not a good showing. Especially when more of you sign up for away MISGAs than our own home event. Go to Sign Up Genius and get your name on the roster, it automatically closes at 9am Monday morning.

For those of you who are new to the group, on 9/30 we will have a Guest Day. You can bring one guest, they only pay what you pay for the event. This is a fun day event, most likely a scramble without handicaps, so bring anyone you want. And if you are an Ace Card member, their cart fee is $15 also.

5&7 day guest - cart fees only
Golf fit and play guests - cart fees only
Fit & Play guest $50 + cart fees
Daily Golf guest $50 + cart fees

Finally, welcome back Lew. HGSGA Update - September 2, 2021

HGSGA Update - August 30, 2021

Today was the second leg of the Annual Columbia Cup. We sent 12 of our guys to do battle against 12 of Fairway’s finest. As usual, the Fairway Hills guys put up a strong fight, seems some of us Hobbits guys find the tight wooded fairways an unfamiliar avenue. We are used to wide open spaces - or maybe it was just me.

The results are in.  We won today's match 16.5 to 13.5.  This, combined with our earlier match at Hobbits' gives us a total as follows:

Hobbits' Glen 39.5
Fairway Hills  19.5

Next year, if we can get Fairway to get a larger number of players together, we can include more players.

Thanks to Dwight Johnson and Reg Hahne for taking charge and captaining the Hobbits players.

Click the links and you will find the results of the State ABCD tournament (congratulations to Bob Egge for defending his gross championship) and an update on course conditions from our greenskeeper.

HGSGA Update - August 26, 2021

Well, I think I learned something today. Pressure sure makes those 3 foot putts seem like they are at least 30 feet. For those of us who coasted on the front nine, reality hit during the
alternate shot back nine. The average gross score for the field on the front was 37, while the
back nine gross average was 44. For a third of the field the spread was between 10-14 strokes
difference.

For a full report you can go to the leaderboard and see all the scores.

We paid out 6 places, 2 gross and 4 net. Since our 2 gross winners were also in the top 4 net,
we reached further down and paid the next in line, 4,5,6 places.

All in all, it seems everyone enjoyed the round. Will most likely repeat it next year.

Gross winners
Doyle, Michael +
Winstead, Bruce $30 32 35 67
Egge, Bob +
Wilson, Drew $20 34 36 70

Net Winners

Levin, Steve +
Hahne, Reg $30 29 34 63
Greer, Brooke +
Romeo, Tom $20 30 36 66
Case, F.T. +
Wichlin, Mark $15 37 30 67
Kominski, John +
Pagnotta, Alex $10 34 36 70

Next week several events:
Monday – Columbia Cup
Thursday – Championship Series #5
Thursday – Some players going to Norbeck

HGSGA Update - August 19, 2021

Glad to have a good set of partners for today – made my miss hits less painful. But I did make some long birdie putts…Since there was a bunch of ties for 3rd, Golf Genius broke them using the Most to least difficult hole. Payouts were extended to the 3 teams shooting a 65, but based on tie breakers. Here are today's rusults:

1 Smith, Robert + Feldstein, Steve + Johnson, Bruce + Phillips, Cecil 63 $ 20.00
2 Caporaletti, Mike + Hines, Joseph + Wilson, Drew + Fornadel, Richard 64 $ 15.50
T3 Wilson, Doug + Sumner, Ian + Case, F.T. 65 $ 12.00
T3 Duklewski, Joe + Wikse, Carl + Bona, Jim + Schwenz, Charles 65 $ 10.00
T3 Sutton, Steve + Satterfield, Felton + Logue, Gerry + Ferraro, Philip 65 $ 8.00
T6 Greer, Brooke + Hohman, David + Fields, Richard + Burrows, Jim 67
T6 Moyer, Len + Hickey, Tom + Chiccone, Frederick + Ward, Richard 67
T6 Resnick, Stuart + Johnson, Dwight + Chicca, Thomas 67
9 Derheim, Dave + Cardwell, Mark + Kausal, Tony + Jarrett, Doug 68
T10 Winstead, Bruce + Pope, Steve + Tortolani, Ed + Roca, Rich 69
T10 Seelaus, Tim + Girardi, Nick + Freiert, Jim + Levin, Steve 69
T10 Kokes, Kevin + Greene, Brad + Ward, Chris + Duncan, Bill 69
13 Carr, Jerry + Yaksich, Nick + Bucklew, Neil + Gaudio, Steve 74

Also this week we finalized the Match Play semi final draw. The winners of these matches will then meet for the Championship Match, the other 2 will meet to determine 3rd and 4th places:

Tim Seelaus (A) vs. Reg Hahne (D)
Gerry Logue (B) vs. Jim Bona (C)

Next Week:
State ABCD is being held at Holly Hills on Monday, 8/23. We are sending 17 players and Bob
Egge will go back as the last winner of the event. Originally we were only allotted 4 slots, but
were able to send 13 additional players. So, next time, if you think you want to play in one of
these events, sign up, you will have a good chance of getting in.

Thursday: Nine-Nine format – should be fun, it’s a 2Man pick your partner (or we will assign
you one). Front nine is a Scramble, Back nine is Alternate Shot.

August 30th: This the 2nd half of the Columbia Cup. We will be playing at Fairway Hills and go in with a commanding lead from the 1st half: Hobbits 23, Fairway 6. Sign up closes this Sunday.

Finally a note about the year end Banquet. We have decided not to hold an indoor event. with the ongoing Covid issue it became evident that getting 60-80 people together in one room was not a good idea. So we are in the process of looking at holding an outdoor gathering in October after one of our Home events. Stay tuned.

Ian

HGSGA Update - August 12, 2021

After a bit of shuffling, we managed to get the event off today. A total of 57 players started but the heat got to some and not everyone finished.

Check the leaderboard to see how your team did. Because of the early cancellations we sent out several 3somes, we used Blinds to fill in – Golf Genius does a good job in tabulating the scores.

Money Winners were:

1st Challedon Dave Price $25.00
1st Challedon John Ziegenhein $25.00
1st Hobbits Tom Hickey $25.00
1st Musket Ridge Bob Harris $25.00
2nd Musket Ridge Kirk Isenbart $20.00
2nd Blue Mash David Kulick $20.00
2nd Hobbits Steven Gaudio $20.00
2nd Challedon Joe Negley $20.00
3rd Musket Ridge Frank Frodyma $15.00
3rd Blue Mash Gary Palmer $15.00
3rd Hobbits Reg Hahne $15.00
3rd Hobbits Gerry Logue $15.00
4th Hobbits Mike Caporaletti $10.00
4th Winters Run Fred Boecher $10.00
4th Musket Ridge Darrell Blevins $10.00
4th Hobbits Bill Duncan $10.00

Next week we will have a 4 man scramble, let’s hope the Tropics don’t send out too much rain – Alex, can you check on this for us?

On 8/23 we will have a good representation at the State ABCD tournament being held at Holly Hills. Bob Egge, the defending champion, will be joined by 18 other Hobbits Glen Seniors.

Good luck guys!
Ian

Bretton Woods MISGA - August 11

80 golfers survived the heat and humidity at Bretton Woods on Wednesday. I think I captured all of the names of winners from Hobbit’s Glen:

Brad Greene - Closest to the pin
Jerome Carr - 4th place team
Mike Caporaletti - 3rd place team
Philip Ferraro - 2nd place team

Hope I didn’t miss anyone!

Mike Caporaletti

Next week several events:
A last minute invite from Prospect Bay for 12 players on 8/3, roster must be sent in by Saturday7/29 at noon;

Championship Series #4, still a chance to improve your standings. Also note that we are using the low 2 of 4 CS scores to pick our qualifiers for the State ABCD to be held on 8/23 at Holly Hills.

Finally, bear with me for the next 2 weeks. Lew is in Europe and Mark is speeding around in the Blue Flame somewhere up and down the coast. Thus I will be left to my devices to schedule everyone. So, no last minute adds or drops by you guys, Sunday night is the cut off for Thursday, pay attention please – I am not Lew or Mark, I’m older and crankier.

HGSGA Update - July 22, 2021

Good turnout again with lots of close scores. The money winners for the day were:

Stevie Ray Scarborough/Bill Stetka 70 Gross $30

Andy Finkel/Joe Duklewski 65 Net $30
John Barth/Dave Derheim 65 Net $25
Richard Fields/Steve Levin 67 Net $20
FT Case/Mark Wichlin 67 Net $20
Mark Cardwell/Dave Thomas 67 Net $20

We will be sending out the list of qualifiers for the State 2 Man shortly. Mike Caporaletti will be in charge of running you guys down to be sure you are still going to the event if you qualified. As I said before, we only have 2 slots but I expect additional ones to be given to us so as they open up we will go down the list.

Next week we have an away MISGA event scheduled at Manor CC. I am trying to get everyone in who wants to play, if they limit us we will use the lottery system. So if you have signed up and are not going, please remove your name or contact Ian to let him know.

The following is a public service announcement – whoever found Jim Bona’s sunglasses, please return them!

See you next week!
Ian

HGSGA Update - July 15, 2021

After a somewhat tumultuous start this morning, we were able to get everyone off who wanted to play thanks to the efforts of Lew, Mark and Rich. Seems that we had some unexpected players showing up who were not scheduled, but we seemed to work everything out.

Also a thanks to the staff who helps us get everything ready in the morning and the volunteers who brought coffee/doughnuts (Randy) and who delivered out lunches (Felton and Rick).

Next week we have 2 away MISGA events, Eagles Nest on Monday, Challedon on Wednesday.

On Thursday, we have the 2-Man qualifier event. We use this event to select the teams we will send to the state finals on 9/9/21 which will be held at Norbeck. We will have 2 official slots to fill in addition to the one that Craig Ostrom & Doug Wilson automatically qualify for since they were the 2019 Champions. If you know someone that you want to partner with, contact them and update your names on SignUpGenius. Otherwise we will pick a partner for you when we set up the roster.

Click here for todays money winners. Click here for full results. Those of you from Hobbits will be able to pick up your gift cards from the Pro Shop.

Our match play tournament continues to play out. The D bracket finals are set. Steve Pope will play Reg Hahne.  Jim Bona won the C bracket after defeating John Barth in the bracket final. Gerry Logue has won his side of the B bracket and is waiting for a few matches on the other side to find out who he will play in the bracket finals. In the A bracket finals, Defending Champion Dave Derheim will play Tim Seelaus. Stay tuned....

Have a great weekend!

HGSGA Update - July 8, 2021

Well we beat the rain, but some of us were hoping midway that the round would be a wash out.

CS3 is in the bag and the leader board has shuffled around a bit. But don’t despair if you are not up near the top, there are 3 more attempts to change your position.

Next week we have 3 events going on, the Columbia Cup on Monday, a MISGA event at Montgomery CC on Tuesday and our home MISGA event on Thursday.

A reminder for the 2 man event on 7/22, this is a qualifier for the State event. If you know who you want to be paired with, please indicate it on SignUpGenius, otherwise we will pair you up ourselves. If your team qualifies, then both of you need to agree to go to the State Championship to be held on 9/9 at Norbeck CC, no substitutions will be allowed.

Lew has let all of you know that he will be overseas visiting his daughter and her family. Mark Cardwell has stepped up and will be our Golf Genius guru, spending the long sleepless, thankless, frustrating hours tackling the ever changing rosters – let’s help lower the frustration level by adding/deleting your name in a timely manner on SignUpGenius.

We are experimenting with SignUpGenius - setting automatic cut off times for the sign ups. Currently it is set so that 4 days prior to an event, if you attempt to add or delete your name, you must contact us by email to have it done. When you hit “Submit and Sign Up”, if you are late, you will see a message telling you to email hgsga.signup@gmail.com . We will then  add/delete you. This gives us better control over the rosters and pairing.

Here are today's money winners

We had two match play events today, Jim Bona defeated Bruce Johnson & Steve Pope defeated Matt Hauser. Earlier this week Dave Derheim defeated Bruce Winstead. Updated brackets are on the sidebar.

Next week we will play an ABCD team event, spread the wealth out a little.
There is also an away MISGA at Musket Ridge for those who signed up. Tee time is 8:30. You are responsible for notifying the host club if you are not going to play, we have sent in the roster. Do not be a no-show, it costs them money for food prep.

Also if you are interested in playing in the Columbia Cup event on 7/12, be sure to sign up. We will close the roster on July 4th or when the sign up reaches 24 names. We will then use a lottery system to select the 12 players - the rest will be on standby.

A housekeeping note: after you complete your round, if you have used a cart, make sure you empty your trash.

Finally, I heard a bit of grumbling about last week's Home MISGA event, specifically the food situation. We had addressed this early on, knowing that until guidelines were changed, holding an indoor dining event was not feasible at the time. The best alternative was the box lunch and it was clearly spelled out to the visiting clubs as well as to all our members. It went smoothly with a lot of help from our guys to get the food out to everyone.

We hope to be able to change things once CA has its meeting in a few days and changes some of the guidelines. If so, we will hopefully be able to go back to the old ways.

See you next week

Ian

HGSGA Update - June 17, 2021

What a day for our first MISGA mixer. I want to thank everyone who participated and all those who assisted with the preparation and those who did volunteer duties. For the first mixer of the season, after a year's layoff, I think things went well. As the season progresses, we should see these events return to normal, Coffee, Doughnuts, and indoor/outdoor dining.

Todays's money winners are:

Ralph Bowe $30
Steve Pope $30
Steve Levin $30
Mike Caporaletti $20
Jim Bona $20
Stuart Resnick $15
Cecil Phillips $15
Lew Shipp $12.50
Jim Freiert $12,50

Next week we will be playing an individual Stableford event. If you haven't signed up, do so by Sunday. Remember we close out the sign up sheets Sunday evening for regular Thursday events.

Also, a heads up, we will open the sign up for the July 12th Columbia Cup event on this Sunday, June 20th. Read the attached Columbia Cup info sheet if you think you might be interested in representing Hobbits.

A brief word about sign ups. We rely on you to show up if you sign up. It takes time to get the field set up and no shows, late cancellations as well as late pleas to get in, create a lot of extra work for us. These guys are volunteers, we don't even reward them with free beers for all the work they do!

See you next week.

HGSGA Update - June 9, 2021

President's Message

Today was the 2nd of 6 championship events. You can see your standing by clicking the "2021 Golf Genius Results" button on the sidebar, sign in using the GGID: HGSGA2021, and then select  today's round's results from the schedule of events.. Remember, we take the lowest 4 of 6 scores to determine the winner, so you have plenty of time to get in contention if you were disappointed with your round.

Next week we are busy with 3 away MISGA’s and our first Home MISGA. For the home MISGA we will be serving a box lunch rather than a sit-down lunch. Current plans are to have the lunches delivered to the players while out on the course. Hobbits players who are in a winning foursome will receive gift cards as usual. Remember, all players must ride in carts, no walkers and bring your $5 cash prize money.

Finally, on June 20th we will open the sign up of the Columbia Cup, the portion that will be held at Hobbits on Monday, July 12th. The field will be limited to no more than 12 players, so we will only accept a maximum of 24 signups, be on the alert if you want to be a participant, we will close the sign-up on July 4th. Dwight Johnson is the Cup manager for Hobbits and has asked that if you would be willing to donate a guest pass for the July event to accommodate any of the Fairway Hills players who might not have a membership in one of the CA golf packages. If so, please indicate your willingness in the sign-up comment section. The second round of the Cup will be held on August 30th at Fairway Hills.

HGSGA Update - June 3, 2021

Seems like everyone who played in the Texas Scramble enjoyed it. Overall, it was a close game with one team collecting the top prize and since 2nd and 3rd were tied for gross, we simply split the pot.
For those who questioned how we determined the winners, pay attention to your email and you will get a thorough accounting of how we did it.

Winners today were:
Yaksich, Wikse, Hohman, Bona - $20 each
Smith, Maddox, Hahne - $15 each
Caporaletti, Roderick, Fornadel, Keller - $15 each

Players went to Leisure World on 6/2/21 and we had 2 winners:
Thomas Chicca 2nd Place Team - $35
Mike Caporaletti 3rd Place Team - $23

Next week we have the 2nd Round of the Championship series. It is on WEDNESDAY, June 9th. Tee off at 8:30 be ready to leave the putting green after announcements around 8:15.

For those who signed up for Kenwood, we heard back from them, and they have limited us to 10 players, so we have implemented the Lottery system. They will have another date this summer for another chance to play.

Have a good weekend!

HGSGA Update - May 13, 2021
President's Message

Looks like everyone enjoyed the day, whether you won or were defeated. We had a full field with only two matches still undecided. They will have until next week to complete their match.

After today’s round, you will see your next Match Play opponent on the Match Play Bracket. The brackets can be seen by clicking on the sidebar button on the left of this page. Note that the top of the bracket has “play by date” which gives you almost 4 weeks between rounds. It is up to you and your playing partner to arrange the time to play. I couple of quick highlights:
  • You can play on our Thursday HGSGA dates, unless it is a MISGA event or Championship date.
  • Give Lew Shipp notice if you plan to play on a Thursday.
  • If you choose to play on a Thursday, you will be excluded from the official day’s event
  • You can pick your tee boxes. If you cannot agree, gold is the default.
  • You will need to access GHIN to establish your handicap for your match
  • You will need to report the results of your match to: hgsgascores@gmail.com
  • You will need to post your own scores to GHIN.

Next week is a 4-man Stableford event.

Below, you will find a new post about the upcoming Columbia Cup matches. Please take time to read it.

For those of you who might be new to our group, at the end of the rounds, a lot of guys gather upstairs around the fire pit to either brag about their rounds or cry in their beer. Feel free to join in.

Many thanks to Lew for the tight rope he walks trying to balance all of us out for these events.

Ian

2021 Columbia Cup Information (As of 5/13/21)

On July 12th and Aug 30th, we will be having the annual Columbia Cup Match against Fairway Hills. This is a Ryder Cup format with multiple match formats - for some of us it is a pressure packed event. Dwight Johnson is our Captain.

In order to allow members who want to have a chance to participate, we will use the following format to select players.
  • There will be 2 separate Sign-ups on Sign Up Genius, one for each date.
  • We will allow for a maximum of 24 players to sign-up each date.
  • Out of each-sign up, 4 players will be Captain’s pick, the remaining 8 will be by lottery.
  • We will wait list, in order of lottery position, those who are not chosen.
  • And Yes, some players may wind up playing in both events, either as a Captain’s pick or by luck of the draw in the lottery.
  • July 12th - will be held at Hobbits
  • Sign-up will open on June 20th
  • Sign-up will close on July 4th
  • Sign-up will also close once we reach 24 players
  • Aug 30th - will be held at Fairway Hills
  • Sign-up will open on August 8th
  • Sign-up will close on August 22nd
  • Sign-up will also close once we reach 24 players. This will give Dwight Johnson, enough time to make his Captain’s pick and for the lottery to be done.
  • If you want to have a chance to play, please sign up for each day’s event. Make sure you will be available to play the dates you select. Dwight will be setting up the pairing against the Fairway guys, don’t make it difficult for him.
  • As of now, there are no rain dates.

HGSGA Update - May 6, 2021

HGSGA Update - May 3, 2021

Sign Up Genius Procedures for MISGA away events

In order to provide everyone a fair opportunity to play in MISGA away events we will institute the following Lottery process.:
  • If we know that the host club has not limited the number of players we can send, then we will simply open Signup Genius and all those who sign up will be on the roster that is sent over. However, if we later learn that the Host Club does implement a limit, then we will revert to the Lottery System.
  • If we know in advance that there is a limit on the number of players we can send, then we will implement a Lottery System. We will put that information on Signup Genius in the Location Field alerting them that this will be a “Lottery Roster Event”
How the Lottery System will work.
  • If a lottery system is used, we will temporarily close Signup Genius about 10 days before the event and do a lottery (a notice will be sent out to the members).
  • Once the lottery is done, we will place those names back on Signup Genius in the order that the lottery indicates. Once the lottery names are placed back on Signup Genius in the order picked, we will reopen the list for additional names which will then be considered in order of sign up.
  • When the host MISGA club gives us the number of players we can send, we will simply go down the list on Signup Genius and send in those names to the host club. The remainder of the list will be wait listed.
  • We expect that each of you to delete your name in a timely manner from Signup Genius if you find you will not play.

Hopefully this process will allow for a fair opportunity for all our members, new and old to play in some of the MISGA events. With the Covid era, some clubs are limiting the number of players we can send, so this process should give everyone a chance.

HGSGA Update - April 29, 2021

President's Message

We had a large field today - 71 guys and finally warm temperatures!

For our new members, the Championship series is played out over several months. We have 6 events and use the best 4 of 6 to determine our winners. So, even if today’s round disappointed you, I know mine did, there are still 5 more opportunities to improve. At the end of the tournament, we will have a Low Net and Low Gross Champion.

Several members have questioned why we are cutting off Sign Up Genius on Sundays, so I thought I would give you the reasoning on behind this.

  • First and foremost is that a lot of work is being done by Lew Shipp and his team to put together the rosters, and last-minute drops or adds create multiple adjustments. Not only do they spend time setting up the teams, but they also print out score cards and cart sheets. These gentlemen are volunteers, we’re lucky to have them, let’s not make their jobs difficult.
  • Because we are doing more Mixer type events, setting up the foursomes takes additional planning and every time someone gets added or dropped it can mess up the field. Planning goes into the selection of foursomes depending on the type of game we are playing that day. If all we played were medal type events, then it wouldn’t matter, but the interest of the group was for more mixer/team events.
  • Finally, I see no reason that anyone should not be able to make up their mind to play by the Sunday evening before, given that we open the sign ups at least 2 weeks prior to the event. If you have a buddy in the group that you know hasn’t signed up, call, or email them to get it done.

So, for now we will adhere to the Sunday 8 PM cutoff and anyone who wants to play after the sign up is closed, will be wait listed.

Next week we will be playing an ABCD team event. Hoping you will sign up!

HGSGA Update - April 26, 2021

State ABCD and 2Man Tournament Qualifiers

For 2021 we have received our allocations for both Tournaments. In the past we held Division 4 qualifiers, however those feeder tournaments have been eliminated. Therefore, we will use the following Hobbit’s events as our qualifiers to fill the slots provided to us.

ABCD –Tournament to be held on 8/23 at Holly Hills
  • 4 slots available
  • Qualifiers picked from sum of low net (best 2 of 4) of Championship Series 1-4

2Man – Tournament to be held on 9/9 at Norbeck
  • 2 slots available
  • Qualifiers picked from low net “2-Man Pick Your Partner” on 7/22 at Hobbits

The 2019 champions, Craig Ostrom & Doug Wilson for 2Man, and Bob Egge for ABCD will receive automatic invitations and will not count against our quota.

Also, as in the past, we anticipate being able to fill additional slots as other clubs do not fill their quotas.

For details of the events go to www.MISGA.org and click on the links:

These are fun events, good luck qualifying,

Cold & Windy Golf – Only for the Hardy

We still managed to have a good turnout today. I want to thank everyone for their patience while we restructured the foursomes.

Remember to post your scores on GHIN, we will not be doing it for you this week.

Next week is the 1st Championship Series event. For our newer members, we hold a series of 6 Championship events spread out over the season. We then take the best 4 of 6 and use those scores to pick both a Gross and Net Champion. It is a medal play event tournament, which means all holes must be finished – no gimmes on putts, etc.

See you next week. The weather looks good so no need to bring winter wear!

Ian

HGSGA Update - March 28, 2021

Forget the "X"

We gave it a try last week and have decided not to use the "X and estimated score" format for holes not finished on the Golf Genius App or the paper scorecard. The only exception to this policy will be when we play medal play. For all other events we will abide by the following:

How to enter scores into Golf Genius mobile scoring on your phone?
  • Hole not played:- Leave the score blank.
  • Hole not finished:- enter the estimated score. Do not use X..
  • Follow the same rules on the paper scorecards.
What score will be posted for you in GHIN?
  • For holes not played (left blank), the score posted will be a net par.
  • For holes begun but not finished, the score posted will be the player’s estimate of his most likely score or net double bogey whichever is less.

2021 Rainy Day Format

If we decide to cancel an official event, we will look at the weather forecast & conditions the morning of the event, and if we decide to cancel the official event then you will receive an email by 7:30am.. If you do not receive an email, then assume the official event is on.

If the official event is cancelled and the course is open, then
whoever wants to play can show up and they will be sent out using our existing shotgun reservation – subject to any delays from the pro shop
  • We will keep the assigned foursomes together along with tee assignments and shuffle individuals within the groups to accommodate no shows.
  • Players can decide within their own foursome what type of game they want to play
  • Golf Genius will not be used,
  • Players are to post their own scores to GHIN
  • There will be no collection of the $5 prize money.
  • In general, we will make every attempt not to cancel, however, key events such as Championship Series, Match Play Opening Round and 2Man qualifiers will most likely be cancelled due to poor weather forecasts and played on alternate days.
MISGA Home Events will be cancelled by the MISGA Rep. You will be notified by one of the Hobbits MISGA Team via email once he makes the decision. If we cancel the event, we will allow for home play using the Shotgun Start and the blocked-out tee times, weather permitting.
MISGA Away Events are subject to the host club’s weather policy. You are responsible for checking it on your own. Do not assume the mixer is cancelled, you do not want to be a No Show. Many times, our MISGA Rep is alerted, however this is not always the case. If you do decide to cancel you need to call the host club pro shop and let them know, you can find their number on the MISGA.org

HGSGA Update - March 25, 2021

Soggy Conditions, Hardy Seniors

We had a good turnout today despite the wet conditions. The day went off without a hiccup, on time and without slow play, in spite of Cart Path Only. In fact our lead group finished in about 3 ¼ hours.

We especially appreciate how everyone used Golf Genius for scoring and when we matched them to the cards we found almost no errors.

Next week we begin the official season – which means Prize Money. As a reminder, we will be collecting your $5 cash down at the starter stand, Mark Cardwell will be the one handling the money. Please bring exact change.

The format for next week is ABCD best 2 of 4 net. Please signup by Sunday evening. Over the course of the season, we will continue to mix up the foursomes, attempting to have you play with as many of our members as possible.

Looking forward to seeing more of you out there next week.

HGSGA Update - February 24, 2021

A Welcome From Our President - Ian Sumner

I want to take this opportunity to say hello to all our returning and new members. Your executive committee has been hard at work setting the stage for what we hope will be a season that is enjoyable for all members.

The following is a quick recap of topics we have discussed.

Kick Off Meeting: On March 24th we will hold a Zoom meeting to welcome new members and “refresh the memory” of old members. You will get an invitation via email.

Dues: We must receive your dues prior to April 1. If we don’t have them, you will not be included in the playing roster until paid and you will not be eligible for prize money. Dues for new members are $55. Dues for returning members vary. The exact amount can be found by clicking the sidebar button entitled "2021 Dues - Please Check Amount Due."

Sign Ups: We will be using Sign Up Genius (SUG) as the primary vehicle for both Home and Away MISGA events. We will be listing the entire season schedule and will open sign ups to those events approximately 2 weeks in advance. For regular home events we need you to sign up by 5pm Monday of that week’s event. For MISGA events, both home and away, we need you to sign up by the Thursday of the week prior.

While we are posting the schedule for the season, please be aware that it is a “flexible” schedule that may change based on Covid issues and changes to MISGA events. However, we are fairly sure that our major Championship dates will remain firm.

Formats: Based on feedback from approximately half the membership, we will be featuring more “team events” and scrambles. We welcome comments on the schedule and any additional formats you think might be fun for the group – remembering that we do need to be able to set up scoring into Golf Genius.

MISGA Events: Bill Duncan has been busy scheduling both home and away events. Some of the clubs in MISGA have decided not to have events this season but others have and will be adjusting to the Covid issue to maintain safety for the players. Here at Hobbits, we are still working out the issue of shotgun starts and whether or not we will have food served.

Tee Times: Currently we do not have a decision about shotgun starts. Discussions between Hobbits and CA are underway and hopefully by April we will be able to do so. If not, we are exploring using both the 1st and 10th tee as starting tees.

Handicaps: Please double check that you are signed up for the GHIN handicap system. The old MSGA system is no longer used.

Pro Shop Check In: They have asked that, if possible, you register your Credit Card with them so that it will speed up check ins. At the current time they do not accept cash.

Scoring: We will continue to use Golf Genius (GG) as our platform for tabulating scores and results. It is important that members download the app and use it while on the course for HGSGA events. Also, it will be a requirement that the actual scorecard be turned in at the end of the round (a photo of the card emailed to HGSGA.Scores@gmail.com ). With a little luck, as restrictions around Covid decrease, we will once again be able to collect them inside at the Turn House or Pro Shop.

Prize Money: Currently the Pro Shop will not collect cash, we are working on finding a way to collect the $5 Thursday morning prize money. Because of CA's internal accounting system we cannot simply charge your individual credit card for prize money at check in. We plan to pay out winnings via Pro Shop gift certificates to winners.

Website: Please continue to log in to the website for additional information. We will use it to post timely information including winners from our Thursday events. You will receive an email each time the website is updated.

Finally, let’s remember that while things appear to be getting better, we need to be diligent and practice safe Covid procedures.

Looking forward to seeing all of you out there.

Ian

2020 Year-End Wrap Up

It certainly has been a unique year at HGSGA with no MISGAs, no shotgun starts, no food, no rakes, partitioned carts, and all of us running around asking “who was that masked man?” Yet somehow we pulled it off and had a good season in spite of the limitations caused by the pandemic.

In total, we had 89 dues-paying members. Even though we had a late start and several rainouts, we were able to hold 21 events with an average attendance of 52 golfers. This tells me that we filled a void in these troubling times. The fresh air, the distanced socialization, and the friendly competition made the past few months quite enjoyable.

I want to thank the Executive Committee for all their hard work in modifying our operating procedures to accommodate the restrictions. Special appreciation is given to Lew Shipp, our Golf Genius “Genius” who kept us organized and informed each Thursday morning.

I also would like to thank Joan Lovelace for her support and advocacy in allowing leagues to operate. The cart guys and the greenskeepers worked extra hard this year. Gene Hayes and Lisa Wynne kept things going inside the “pro shop bubble” and Peter Law was quite helpful as our starter.

Finally, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as HGSGA president these past two years. It has been a wonderful experience and I enjoyed getting to know each of you.

Rest assured, we are in good hands with our new President, Ian Sumner. His previous experience as our Vice President and as our MISGA Representative has prepared him well for the job. With Randy Maddox continuing as Treasurer, Mark Cardwell as Vice President, Rich Roca as Secretary, Lew Shipp as Golf Genius Administrator and Bill Duncan as our MISGA Rep, I believe we are all set for the new year.

Thank you for being a part of HGSGA. Stay safe and healthy through these next few months. Get that vaccination and I look forward to seeing you at Hobbits in 2021!

We have been given 10 Thursday tee times for our group to use during Nov-Feb. The slots begin at 9:30 and run every 10 minutes through 11:00

We will use Sign Up Genius to collect a maximum of 40 names. The sign-ups will close every Sunday at Noon - we must return any unused tee times to Hobbits.

Once the sign-up closes, you will be assigned to a group with the time slots as follows. It is done based on order of sign up in Sign Up Genius. We will not be involved in changing groups for you, show up at your allotted time or trade with another player on your own and coordinate with the starter.

1–12 (1st Group)

33-40 (4th Group)

These are not official functions; all we are doing is getting the time slots for our HGSGA members. Thus, we will not set up foursomes or declare any format for games. Each foursome will determine their own format. Once your group gathers, I suggest you do a blind draw to put together the foursomes.

We will continue to use Sign Up Genius as long as we get a sufficient number of players and monitor it for our group.

Let’s see how this works out for all the hardy souls. We will tweak it as needed.

Also note that Frost Delays may push tee times out so check with Hobbits, we are not monitoring this.

HGSGA Update – October 22, 2020

Finkel/Duklewski and Wilson/Ostrom Win 2-Man Scramble
Forty-four guys showed up on a foggy morning that morphed into a beautiful autumn day to play in this year’s 2-Man Scramble Tournament. Andy Finkel and Joe Duklewski won the net competition shooting a 61 ($20 each). In the gross competition, Doug Wilson and Craig Ostrom led the way with a 61 ($20 each). Other net money winners were as follows:

Shipp/Violette 64 ($15 each)
Doyle/Mann 65 ($12 each)
Thompson T/Hickey 65 ($12 each)
Smith/Wikse 66 ($10 each)
Caporaletti/Chicca 66 ($10 each)
Kokes/Wilcox 66 ($10 each)

No tiebreakers today. Since this was a scramble, we will not post any scores to Golf Net. Full results can be seen by clicking the results and stats button on the sidebar and sign in using GGID: HGSGA2020

Important Housekeeping Items

As we approach the end of the season, we will be sending you two important emails that will request your reply. The first email will present a slate of officers for the 2021 season. We will request that you review the slate and approve or disapprove by replying to the email. The second email you will receive will concern your funny money earnings. We will be giving you options to receive a check or credit your earnings toward next year’s dues. It will all be explained in detail so do not reply until you get the full explanation in the separate email.

Next Week

Our last day of league play will be next Thursday, October 29. It will be a 5-club event. This means you will only be able to use 5 clubs including your putter. It should be fun day that will stretch your shot-making skills and creativity. Hope you can join us!

HGSGA Update – October 15, 2020

Finkel and Wilson win on Multi-Tee Day

Andy Finkel topped the leaderboard in today’s net competition shooting a 59 ($24). In the gross competition, Doug Wilson led the way shooting a 62 ($24). If these scores look too good to be true it is because they are the sum of the 16 lowest scores on the player’s scorecard. In other words, the two highest scores were not used.

For those of you that followed today's leaderboard on your phone, you may have noticed a difference in that Golf Genius was programmed to discard the two worse scores in relation to par – not necessarily the two highest scores. Since we billed the event as the two highest scores, our man Lew has gone back and updated our money winner leaderboard based on discarding the two highest scores. Here are the other money winners from today’s net competition:

Dave Derheim 61 ($18)
Tom Hickey 62 ($16)
Doug Brooks 62 ($16)
Felton Satterfied 63 ($11)
Lew Shipp 63 ($11)
Tim Seelaus 63($11)
Randy Maddox 63 ($11)
Len Moyer 63 ($11)
Mac Ramsey 63 ($11)
Greg Douglas
63 ($11)

No tie breakers today. Scores will not be posted to Golf Net. This means you should not post your score as well. We will send out a spreadsheet with everyone’s score via a separate email. Sorry for the confusion.

Next Week – 2 Man Scramble, Free Beer, and Awards

Hope you have picked your partner for Big Mac’s 2 Man Scramble scheduled for October 22. It should be a blast. If you want, you can sign up as an individual and we will match you up. After you finish your round, join us on the Turn House lawn for an end of the year socially distanced celebration. This will be a small fluid gathering since we come in at all different times. Your first two beers or soft drinks will be on HGSGA. Awards will be available for pickup for this year’s match play champion, finalist, and bracket winners and our top 3 Championship Series finishers in both the gross and net categories. Hope to see you there!

Attached are results from today and the list of money winners.

HGSGA Money Winners 4.21.22.pdf (22 KB)
Different type of game today, hope you enjoyed it. Attached is a list of the Money winners, we paid out to 25% of the field plus 2 closest to the pin. Pace of play was good, so keep it up.
We posted all scores today to GHIN. Do not post your own score!
Next week we will be playing a Florida Scramble (I did clear the rules with Gov. DeSantis just to avoid any pushback from those who might find some fault with how we structure or explain the rules.)
It’s simple game, just like a regular scramble except, after everyone tees off, the group selects the best shot and the next shot (here’s the Florida Twist) is played by the 3 players whose ball was not selected. This process is then repeated all the way through the hole (even on the putting green). Also, we will require that each player’s drive must be used 3 times in the round. The math should be straight forward (can I say that Gov?), we score it just like any other scramble.
Be sure to sign up before we close Sign up Genius on Sunday morning at 8:30am. Saves our team (Lew and Mark) a lot of work if they don't have to make any last minute changes.
Finally a word to our new members, check the upcoming events on Sign up Genius. You will see that we have scheduled on May 5th, Championship Series #1. This is the 1st of 6 dates throughout the season - we use your 4 best scores of the 6 to crown both the Gross and Net Champions. However, you must have an established handicap for us to use your score.
See you next week.
Ian

Thanks goes to Mike Caporaletti and crew for today’s Home MISGA event. Everything went smoothly and the visitors seemed to enjoy themselves. There was a bit of scrambling to adjust the foursomes, but Lew bailed me out and took charge.

Gift cards were issued on the spot, some of our winners didn’t stick around to collect them so we put their names on the cards and they are in the ProShop. The link to the leaderboard will be put on the website along with other information. https://www.hobbitsglenseniors.com

Some of you occasionally have questions about how the Handicap system works in conjunction with GHIN. Lew has found a good website explaining everything you need to know. We will post the link on the website.

Next week there are two events on the schedule, an away MISGA @ Kenwood and Championship Series #3. Remember, for the Championship Series (CS) we use your best 4 of 6 scores to determine the Gross and Net champions. Also, we are using the best 2 of the first 4 CS as the qualifier for the State ABCD.

The Match play event marches on. If you want to play your match play during next week’s CS series we need to know ASAP. You can put that information in comments area when you sign up. We will accommodate you doing both, the CS event and a Match play at the same time, but if you do that, you must putt out everything for it to count as in the CS events. No “gimmes” or pickups.

Finally, for the most part everyone has done a good job in entering scores into Golf Genius. There are several reasons why this is important.
•    It makes our job easier since all we need to do is verify the scores in GG match the scorecard before posting – we can quickly check your Scorecard totals vs GG entries
•    It allows everyone to see how they stand vs the field when they look at the leaderboard during the round. Guys like to know how the stand. Not posting makes you look like you are sandbagging.
•    It allows us to get the winners paid without waiting for scorecards if you or your team are out of the money.
Unless you’re cross eyed, have a phobia against electronics or have unusually large fingers, I expect that you really don’t have a good reason for not using Golf Genius. Let’s cooperate, everyone. If you really need help, ask your 10 year old grandkid for lessons.

See you next week.

IanGood news - no rain, Bad news, no roll, I came up short too often.
Well we got it in, mud and all. Once we get the list of qualifiers verified we will get it out to you and Mike will reach out to you to verify your willingness to go forward. We went over the scorecards and interestingly only 12 teams indicated they wanted to go forward to the state event. We currently only have 4 slots available to us, but historically, we have been able to get more in as other clubs don’t use theirs so we will wait list many of you.
Attached is the list of money winners, we paid 30% of the field - tie breaker used was the hardest hole method.

Next week is our Home MISGA event. We have increased the sign up to 30 players, so if you haven’t done so, go ahead and sign up. On that note, some of you have mentioned to me that you either don’t have a smart phone or the capability to use Golf Genius on your phone. As long as we know in advance who you are, we can make sure to place you with another Hobbits Senior who does have GG on their phone. So sign up, just let me know - I do the pairings for our home MISGA events.

As many of you know, we have been actively working with the Turn House and CA to see if we can improve the food situation both at our Home MISGA events and also our regular Thursday events. Today, Mike Caporaletti and I met with Carissa from the Turn House to discuss MISGA lunches and lunch/beverages following our Senior golf on Thursdays. They are earnestly seeking to improve the relationship, so we would like all of you to do the same.

Home MISGA

  • The July 14th mixer will include a dine-in lunch following golf.
  • The cost for the mixer is as follows:  $55 for 5- and 7-day members with an ACE Card, $60 for 5- and 7-day members without an ACE Card. Daily members will also be responsible for greens fees.
  • We agreed to change the menu that the Turn House will provide for MISGA.  Rather than the deli spread MISGA lunches will include the following:
    • A tossed or Ceasar Salad,
    • Willow Bottom Burger (with fixings such as lettuce tomato and cheese) Homemade chips or potato salad
    • Dessert (cookie, brownie or ice cream)
    • Beverage (iced tea, water, lemonade and soda)Hobbits Glen Senior Golf
In addition, we are working together in order to insure more players enjoy the Turn House after golf each Thursday.  Many of us congregate around the fire pit, but we should also feel comfortable going inside at the Bar area. To facilitate this, the Turn House is working on the following.

  • An option to pre-order food from a limited menu will be made available .
  • QR codes will be used so golfers can enjoy a timely bite to eat and a beverage following golf each Thursday.
As a gesture of good will, the Turn House is going to provide all players in the CS #4 on July 21st a free canned beer following golf.Couldn’t have asked for a nicer day. Although my foursome had a lot of difficulty figuring the wind direction, mainly because our esteemed retired principal wasn’t able to determine which direction was West (sorry Nick). Good thing he wasn't one of our early pioneers heading out west to settle, who knows where he might have ended up, Cristoforo Colombo must be rolling over knowing a countryman of his has no sense of direction.
We paid the top 2 players for Gross & Net in each Flight, if you won Gross you couldn’t also win Net so we went down the list for top 2 Net winners. Attached is the list of money winners, full results are available via the leaderboard on Golf Genius. BTW, almost a 100% accuracy for those of you who entered scores on the phone when compared to the actual score cards.
Next week we have Championship Series #5. Those of you in the hunt for Gross and Net, still have 5&6 to lower your scores. Even if you are not in the hunt, still sign up, we will pay our normal Net and Gross prize money for the day. Also, you can enjoy the banter upstairs afterwards, the crowd is growing so stick around, have a beer/soda.
Remember, we lock the sign up at 8:30 Sunday morning, so please sign up ahead, keeps me from constantly changing the tee sheet with last minute adds and drops.
As was announced today, kudos to the Hobbits guys who helped secure the Columbia Cup for another year.
Finally, plan ahead for our Guest day, Sept 29th, sign up is open. Even if you aren't bringing a guest, sign up, we will match you with another HGSGA player. Remember, only one guest per member an ALL must ride. See the attached Memo for more information.
See you next week, stay safe if traveling this weekend.

Membership
2023 Membership Application

Joining the HGSGA provides you with a host of opportunities to play golf and develop new friendships. Members must be at least 50 years old and have an established handicap at Hobbits Glen Golf Club. The Hobbits Glen staff will assist you in setting up your handicap.  If your CA membership includes 7 day golf or 5 day golf, you will not have to pay a fee for your handicap registration. If you have another type of CA membership, there will be an annual fee.  You also may want to consider buying an Ace Card that includes handicap registration, discounted cart fees and an allotment of practice balls.

You will have to enter a number of scores before an actual handicap is established.  You are welcome to play in HGSGA Thursday league events while you are establishing your handicap, but you will not be able to compete for prizes until your handicap is set.

Members have the opportunity to participate in approximately 65 events beginning the first Thursday in April and ending the last Thursday in October. About half of these events are regular Thursday morning league golf.  We have a medal play championship series, a match play tournament, and a variety of formats that you will find enjoyable.  The remaining events are away and home events sponsored by the Maryland Interclub Senior Golf Association (MISGA). MISGAs offer a great opportunity to play some of the most beautiful courses in Maryland at a very reasonable price ($45 to $65 - green fees, cart, and lunch).

We encourage members to send in their membership application and their $55 dues in December,  January and February. Early registration allows our volunteers to better prepare for the upcoming season. Click on the above 2022 Membership Application button to get started. We hope you find your membership to be rewarding. Welcome aboard!
